Committee Objective and Goals

The Kansas Water Environment Association’s Safety Committee’s objective is to promote safety in all aspects of the water environment industry in Kansas. The Committee will keep the membership of KWEA apprised of safety issues that may affect design, operation, and maintenance of wastewater collection and facilities in the State. The Committee will also provide a program to identify individuals and/or entities that exhibit outstanding safety records.

Committee Activities

The Safety Committee shall conduct, but not be limited to the following activities:

  1. Maintain a library, and/or area in the KWEA web site that focuses on safety programs and safety issues in the water environment industry.
  2. Prepare safety-related articles for publication in Splashings.
  3. Maintain a liaison with the WEF Safety Committee and prepare KWEA’s applications for the George W. Burke Safety Award.
  4. Administer the annual Safety Awards program to recognize outstanding safety programs at selected municipal and industrial wastewater treatment facilities. Coordinate presentation of awards at the KWEA Annual Conference.
  5. Facilitate one technical session at the KWEA Annual Conference focused on Safety, and coordinate safety related presentations at other technical sessions as requested by other committees.
  6. Maintain a database on injury data and safety statistics for systems in Kansas, and communicate this data to the member ship of KWEA annually. Maintain a comparison of safety in Kansas with other States.
  7. Coordinate with KWEA Board for safety presentations at the Fall mini-conference.
  8. Meet at least four times annually to provide a forum for discussion of safety related issues.
  9. The committee chair shall submit a written report to the Vice President on the committee's activities at least 30 days prior to the annual meeting. The Vice President will compile the committee reports, distribute them to the Board, and turn them over to the new vice president for use in assessing changes for the next program year.
